Syrah (Shiraz)
[see-RAH]
This red-wine grape gained its reputation in France's Rhone region. It is the principal grape of wines from Cornas, Cote-Rotie, Crozes - Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint Joseph. When young, these wines are deep-colored and tannic, with strong tar, spice, and pepper qualities. Syrahs are long-lived, and as they mature, they exhibit flavors of sweet blackberries, black currants, and plums, with hints of smokiness. In the Southern Rhone, Syrah is used to contribute flavor and structure to the multi-variety wines from Chateauneuf du Pape and Cotes du Rhone. Shiraz, as Syrah is called in Austalia, is that country's most widely planted red grape. The most famous Shiraz is the incredibly rich and complex Grenache Hermitage, produced by Penfolds. In California, the ranks of long-time, prominent Syrah producers like Joseph Phelps and McDowell have been joined by relative newcomers Bonny Doon and Qupé.

Petite Sirah
[peh-TEET sih-RAH, peh-TEET see-RAH]
Grown mainly in California, this red-wine grape was initially thought to be related to the renowned Syrah of France's Rhone region. It produces a deep-colored, robust, and peppery wine that packs plenty of tannins and has good aging ability. Although not as popular as Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel, Petite Sirah does much better in California than in France.
